Join Me As I Build a Sci-Fi Universe

What do you think of when I say “Sci-Fi Universe”? Star Wars? Star Trek? The Expanse?

Maybe Frank Herbert’s Dune or Isaac Asimov’s Foundation?

Well, I’m creating my own sci-fi universe. Come join me for the fun!

  • What is The Fertile Galaxy?
I am imagining a time in the far future — so far ahead that the entire galaxy has been explored by many intelligent species. So much time has passed that entire civilizations have come and gone, even as new ones appear, some still thrive, and others struggle to survive.

  • Why am I building it?
There are so many stories in my head, and as they come into focus, they often fit like puzzle pieces into the same universe, the same long history. This is my sandbox to play in, and I want to share the joy it brings me.

  • What kinds of things will my patrons see?
I’m working on the first novel in this universe right now, and I expect it will be a long process. But in the meantime, I’ve been making discoveries every day: new insights into how the characters fit, what the world is, how things came to be. Every day I’ll share something about what I’m doing. It may just be an insight. It may be a challenge or a dilemma. It may be writing, it may be math, it may be an image or a photo.

  • What cadence am I aiming for?
As Stephen Pressfield reminds us in “The War of Art”, we have to do the work every day. I’m aiming to spend time, every single day, working on research, planning, and writing. Every day I will share evidence of my effort. Once a week I will be sharing a story, a scene, or an essay. Monthly I will be sharing peeks behind the curtain.

  • What kind of company am I inviting people to keep with me?
It brings me joy to inhabit Larry Niven’s “Known Space” or David Brin’s “Uplift” series. I want to share my own universe with others who thrill at vast spaces filled with incredible possibilities. Let’s nerd out together as I share my creative process!
